The BBC and the Great British Bake Off
I don't watch the show as competitive cooking is one step up from monkey tennis but how does the BBC build up a show from nothing to something watched by 14m and then be left with nothing once it is successful

I understand that the BBC is obliged to use outside production companies for a proportion of its output but surely it has some financial asset or continuing interest once it succeeds as per Top Gear.
They at least own the rights to sell the format around the world don't they or does that all go to the production company too?

Wouldn't it depend on who actually came up with the idea. The production company think tank or the BBC think tank. Either way this would be agreed and contracted.

It's obviously something they've acquired/licenced from a production house rather than produced themselves. It's far far cheaper to do that than produce everything yourself.

Now said production house has realised the power of their product and the BBC's option has seemingly expired, they can ask the earth in licencing fees for any new series deal, as is their prerogative.

I can't grasp the fact that millions and millions of people are watching and talking about a fucking programme about baking!!! BAKING!!

Infact, you know what,... I don't believe it.
Viewing figures must be just made up. it must be. There's no fucking way that millions of people sit and watching baking. I don't believe it.

It's moving to channel 4 who are paying £10M pounds more for it than the BBC were prepared to offer.

Weirdly, I don't really think it matters what it's about, almost. It's comfort TV for some people. They are no more likely to bake, ballroom dance, sew a dress, throw a pot or any of these things than you or me. But it's slump in a sofa entertainment fodder that has no nastiness, no jeopardy, doesn't require any mental interaction, it's just there, like broadcast mashed potato.

I don't personally watch any of these things, and would rather sit in the garden gazing at ants for two hours than watch Come Dancing. But it's 'harmless' and 'nice' and that's what some people crave in interesting times.

It's like a sports equivalent for people who don't watch sports - something you can just wallow in for a couple of hours and not think about real life.

I think that's it, anyway.

Spot on FIvetide.

It does throw up some pointed Qs about the BBC though. And what it is "for".

Whittingdale (whatever his name was, former culture secretary with that dominatrix "companion") said it was EXACTLY the type of show the BBC should be making. Yet move to C4 shows they weren't "making it", really just broadcasting it. So it's fair game they've lost it, I suppose.

The BBC don't actually "make" much at all, in headline terms. They buy in.

It'll go tits up if a) Berry and Hollywanker don't go with it. b) They try and change it, even if they do go. Frankly, it's probably doomed anywhere but the BBC. Be CAREFUL what you wish for.

Still many of audience's age won't watch it anyway on C4. Many seem to think C4 is still all swearing and pinko lesbian outrage. (My mum, for one).

Ironically, prob half of Bake audience don't even pay license fee as they are OAPs so cannot complain. BBC is peddling programmes for the idle rich!!

10 Chris Evans salaries would have let the BBC pay it. That would have been a win-win, surely?

I don't care, never watched it. Can't bear talent shows focussing on mundane talents. We're surely not far from All Celebrity Bathroom Grouter.

I prefer the BBC to make decent drama. Am enjoying One Of Us. That's an outside production company too. Thought Versailles (BBC co-production) was good. But I'm obviously MASSIVELY gay.

(yes, I'm bored.)

Re: The BBC and the Great British Bake Off
I find it one of the most refreshing thing about British culture that something like this has such a following.

Baking has long been about building communities, starting in homes and families and moving beyond. I have great memories of baking, smells etc from both my mother and my grandmother.
My wife does it for Christmas and other times for our friends. She enjoys learning new skills, its a hobby and pastime.

It is not my favourite show, even among cooking shows but I will watch during supper once a week. Fivetide has it partly right, its not anything super exciting or challenging but not everything has to be all the time because it has other benefits. And it is the equivalent of sport for some people.

If that does not resonate with you, life goes on. And this is great news because it is not longer coming out of your license fee.

I should be fine with it as long as Jimmy Carr isn't the host.

People need to cook don't they?

Re: The BBC and the Great British Bake Off
On a different note, the BBC are on a hiding to nothing with bidding for programmes, they have the public and the government on their backs, and have to go into negotiations with one hand tied behind their back. They are in no man's land, they need to abandon the licence fee and advertise or slowly sink in to oblivion

Too many people putting their oar in at the Beeb and wanting their say about how the money is spent.

I tell you what's a bit rich. Alan Sugar putting his two penneth in calling the production company "Greedy and Disloyal" in their behaviour over this.

Yes, because Alan Sugar never took a deal based on profit did he?
